Baisakhi or Vaisakhi is a holy festival in Sikhism. People of North India, mainly Punjabis thank god for good harvest. It is celebrated on 14th April every year. On this auspicious day, gurdwaras are decorated with flowers and kirtan is organized. Sikhs take a shower early morning and visit gurdwaras to express gratitude to the Almighty for the bountiful harvest and pray for their bright future.
At many places in Punjab, fairs are organized and the festival is celebrated with a lot of joy and enthusiasm. At Baisakhi fairs, the main attractions are bhangras, giddas, wrestling bouts, singing, and acrobatics. Performance using folk instruments is also very popular. Delicious food stalls at these fair
make the event even more joyful.
Baisakhi procession is also carried out in many cities. Men, women, and children actively participate in these processions. Mock duels, bands playing religious tunes and performance of bhangra and gidda dance make Baisakhi processions quite colorful and enchanting.
Later in the evening, people exchange greetings with friends and relatives usually with a box of sweets or other traditional gifts.
People of Assam celebrate April 13 as Rongali Bihu, while those in West Bengal celebrate it as Naba Barsha. Bihar celebrates Baisakhi as Vaishakha in honor of the Sun God, Surya while Kerala celebrates it as Vishu and Tamil Nadu as Puthandu.
