The pompadour fish

The pompadour fish is a stunning, flat bodied fish. Having the shape of a discus, the pompadour can reach lengths of 20 cm. Born with soft brown colouring and darker vertical stripes, this fish slowly turns blue with age. By the age of 6 months the blue first begins as flecks on the face and slowly progresses along the body. The pompadour fish is found in the rivers of the Amazon basin. Although beautiful this fish is not common among aquarists because as young they are infected with parasites, which usually kill the fish when transported from the wild to an aquarium.
