Sajarur Kanta running in theatre for 5 weeks straight!
Saibal Mitra’s latest Bomkesh offering, Sajarur Kanta, featuring Dhritiman Chatterjee, Konkona Sen Sharma, Indraneil Sengupta, Kaushik Sen and others, has been running in theatres for five consecutive weeks.
The Bengali private detective played by Dhritiman, is loved by one and all and the three-hour saga meanders like a river, throwing up quirky twists every now and then, making it an interesting watch.
When the director was asked what worked for the film, which is being produced by Macneill Media Pvt Ltd and Pradip Churiwal, he said, “Sharadindu Bandyopadhyay’s Byomkesh is loved by all, so I had a ready audience. That apart, out of the 33 Byomkesh stories, Sajarur Kanta is one of the most popular, so that’s an add-on. Added to that, the audiences are happily riding the Byomkesh wave and my film captured that euphoria,” said Saibal with a smile.
He added, “Dhritiman as Byomkesh generated a lot of curiosity among the audience and I must say that the veteran actor passed with flying colours. He is well accepted as the sleuth. Konkona, a powerhouse of talent, also acted as a crowd-puller.”
So, the length of the film is no deterrent? “Well, some complained about the length and I asked them whether they left the theatre midway? And there was none. So, I have managed to keep the audience glued to their seats,” explained the director.
Dhritiman too is happy that the film is doing well for itself. “The style of the film is of ’60-70s, where the flow is slow and measured and I guess that clicked. Many criticized the creative liberties that the director took, but I feel that worked for the film. A director should interpret a novel his way. And I consciously portrayed Byomkesh as a man who is traditional yet contemporary,” said the actor.
