Shankar Mahadevan looking to continue rich legacy of singers acting in Classical music-based films
Shankar Mahadevan’s selection to play the role of classical singer Panditji, in the forthcoming Marathi film ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusli’ is a continuation of a legacy of singers who performed in mythology based films.
“I was initially hesitant. Its not about being camera shy. I have been part of several music videos and shoots. But there I am just being Shankar Mahadevan,” the musician told dna in an exclusive chat while talking about his first stint as an actor where he plays a renowned music teacher Pandit Bhanushankar.
Govindrao Tembe, who was a harmonium player and music composer, played the hero of ‘Ayodhyecha Raja’ in the talkie film of 1932 made by V.Shantaram. He also performed in ‘Maya Machhindra’, directed by V.Shantaram and based on Mani Shankar Trivedi’s Classical music based play ‘Siddesansar’.
Other examples are ‘Shakuntala’, also made by V.Shantaram, and inspired by ‘Sangeet Shakuntal’. Remake of this film was made by the same director in 1962, through ‘Stree’, which was in color. There was a film named ‘Amar Bhoopali’ in 1951, which was based on the life of the famous Marathi poet Honaji Bala. The lead role was played by Panditrao Nagarkar, who was a good singer.
Now after many years, we find a singer and musician playing the character of a classical singer in the upcoming Marathi film ‘Katyar Kaljat Ghusali’. If you look at his get-up in this film, he reminds you of those singer-musicians who played lead roles in those films of yesteryear’s. Hopefully this will be a real treat for classical music lovers, just like its predecessors!
